Oh yeah, & as i remember more about the event...
In ref to Weckl's performances - as blake said, & i agree, as i look at what he wrote & now that i think about it - DW really IS a "master licksman"... at 1st read, it seems like it's a little "slam" against DW; but as you read on, you realize that DW truly is a master of placing the HIPPEST licks in all the right spaces w/OUT disrupting the continuity of "the flow"... he's undoubtably the best & most musical "licks" drummer i've ever heard [along w/ the Vinmeister & others ;=) ]...
DW's playing on "Got A Match" [CCEB's set finale] is like a hot knife thru butter... this tune RIPS harder live than even the orig studio version [if that's even possible]; & "Trance Dance" [Eye Of the Beholder] displayed some of his tastiest latin-flavored & GROOVIN cowbell/agogo/snare/hat/kick work, as well as those tasty, ultra-hip "Wecklix betwixt the hits n kix"... the guy looks & sounds EFFORTLESS when he plays, as always - & he does indeed, in his own way [a la Horacio, Acuna, & Sanchez] sound like a drummer & a percussionist playing together at the same time, at times...
...the opener, City Gate [long/"live" version] & Rumble, was blazing as you would expect...[just b4 the CCEB set, it appeared Dave was having some trouble w his monitor mix thru the house monitor guys or his personal board/rig... he kept mouthing "i don't have it... i don't have 'em... no, no, NO [binoculars :=) ]"... one could see he was becoming increasingly annoyed [img]mad.gif[/img] w the situation, rolling his eyes & such [img]graemlins/sure.gif[/img] , but he managed to "keep a lid on it" & played thru the opener, w/out his in-ears, like a true professional, a true champ... it seems things didn't clear up to his liking until later in the set...
...the bands' level of improv was at its peak, as usual... [& Mike Pope did an EXCELLENT job of subbin' for da Tooch!]...
Now as for the Vinmonster, wehehelllll....what the heck can ya say about him that hasn't already been said?! ...Weckl testifies to Vinnie's genius/brilliance behind the skins.... [img]eek.gif[/img] [& both of them AWA Dennis testify to Virgil's!] [img]confused.gif[/img] ;=)
